Flexflooring Ltd has recently completed an installation over 300 metres of pathways at Purley Downs Golf Club, transforming grit pathways prone to surface washout into hard wearing, yet soft underfoot Rubbaflex Golf Pathways.

Established in 1894, Purley Downs Golf Club is a mature downland course situated in Surrey with superb views over London.  The club contacted Flexflooring after experiencing problems with their red grit pathways surrounding the clubhouse and the 2^nd, 9^th and 18^th holes, which are partly situated on slopes and therefore prone to washout after heavy rain leaving the pathways uneven underfoot and unsightly. 

Our Rubbaflex Golf Pathways are the perfect solution in such a situation as they are designed to reduce maintenance, reduce path washout from heavy rain and reduce noise associated with other hard paving options whilst increasing the safety and aesthetic appeal of uneven surfaces made from grit, crushed shell or pebble.  In addition, Rubbaflex golf pathways are tough and wear resistant to spiked shoes and suitable for buggy use.

The installation at Purley Downs Golf Club is a good example of the different processes required for installing sloping Rubbaflex pathways in comparison to installing onto flat areas. 

Preparation is a key element on any project, but particularly crucial when installing onto a slope.  In this instance, Flexflooring undertook the necessary ground works including installing a concrete substrate, finished to our specification and laid in one single pour, to offer the stability required to anchor the EPDM topping.  On completion of the surface preparation element, a 15mm wearing course of Rubbaflex EPDM granules is installed onto the cured concrete. 

In comparison, the flat section of the pathway around the 18^th hole required different surface preparation.  This took the form of scrapping back the crushed grit and re-compacting the surface before installing a layer of 25mm of recycled base rubber followed by a 15mm wearing course of Rubbaflex EPDM granules.

The entire installation, including ground works and 3 week break to allow the concrete to cure fully, took just over a month from start to finish.  Given that the installation was undertaken in February 2012, time was also required to allow for the snowy conditions! 

Installation of the Rubbaflex itself took less than 5 working days.  Purley Downs Golf Course opted for 100% black EPDM, for their Rubbaflex golf pathways.

On completion, it is easy to see the transformation, from uneven, untidy grit pathways to smooth, safe Rubbaflex Golf pathways.

Flexflooring Bring Intricate Geometric Floor Design to Life!

Flexflooring Ltd has recently completed an installation of the most intricate surface design that they have ever been involved with.  Requiring millimetre precision, the splash pad surface installed at Barking Park is a great example of the high level of attention to detail that Flexflooring brings to every project.

Since receiving a Heritage Lottery Fund, Barking & Dagenham Council have undertaken an ambitious plan to restore Barking Park including refurbishing the Lido and turning it into a Community Hub with cafe, educational facilities, enclosed wet play area and multifunctional space.  Working with Ustigate, Flexflooring Ltd were brought in to help create the new wet play area by installing our Rubbaflex safety surface.

Installing the perfect substrate is crucial to the longevity of the completed Rubbaflex surface, so Flexflooring and Ustigate worked closely together on the concrete specification to ensure the best substrate possible for the splash pad. 

Once the water jets had been installed and the new 450m² concrete pad poured and set, Flexflooring diamond ground the new surface to remove any laitance and create a strong key for our Rubbaflex surface to bond to.

Flexflooring worked to a detailed design incorporating geometric patterns and water jets.  The pattern set-out had to be millimetre perfect in order to tie in with the intricate water jet design installed by Ustigate.  Therefore on completion of the surface preparation, Flexflooring took a week to measure and set out the pattern, which consisted of interlocking squares and rectangles.

Using the finest EPDM granules from Switzerland, four colours were used to create an eye catching Art Deco inspired design.  To achieve this, Flexflooring started by installing the lilac squares and rectangles across the site.  These sections were then covered to stop dust and debris from discolouring the completed elements before moving on to install the dark blue components of the design.  The light grey sections were then installed which joined up the coloured squares.  The design was completed with the installation of the bright blue sections finishing off the rectangular shape.  Given the intricate nature of the design and the need to install each colour individually, the installation of 450m² took much longer than a single or dual colour installation, but was still completed within 2 weeks.  The fantastic colour scheme has been enhanced by the use of a special UV resistant resin binder to greatly reduce any colour change or fade.

Unfortunately, vandalism can be a common side effect on projects located in public areas, but in this instance, security was required to keep the curious local foxes away from the site overnight, as paw prints never look good in rubber!

On completion, the overall effect is stunning and will only be even more fantastic once the water jets are on and children are playing.  The wet play area is a superb edition to the previously derelict lido and offers a safe, interactive play area and dramatic water feature rolled into one!

Luckily, irregular and curved surfaces pose no problem for our Rubbaflex safety surface, which can be hand trowelled by our team of experience installers both horizontally and vertically over any shaped object whilst maintaining a smooth, seam free finish.

The brief for SSP Water & Play was to refurbish a tired, old paddling pool, adding new interactive features and water play tables.  In order to help create the look of the seaside required, Flexflooring installed two separate colour mixes utilising bright blue for the water and a mix of beige and eggshell for the beach.  The flexibility of our safety surface meant it could be easily installed around the rocks and wet play equipment.  The overall result is an effective and eye-catching design.

If you didn’t make it to Brighton this year, you missed out on two new product launches by Flexflooring.  The first of these is Stonex; a ‘Resin Bound Stone’ system.  The range includes quartz, marble and natural stone aggregates encapsulated with specialised light stable resins resulting in a smooth and compressed surface that can be used both externally around pools, for pathways and driveways and internally for kitchens, bathrooms, conservatories and offices.

The second product launched at this year’s SPATEX was Flexiseal: an innovative two part flexible epoxy resin, which has been developed specifically to fill porous rubber crumb surfaces, such as our Rubbaflex rubber surface and prevent water permeating through the surface.  In essence, the material helps to make our Rubbaflex rubber surface act more like a tile in terms of porosity, but keep the rubber crumbs properties of being flexible, non-slip and soft under foot.

It was developed from an established range of swimming pool coatings, is chlorine resistant and UV stable.  It has the added property of strengthening the bond within the crumb and is ideal for areas that may have been exposed to excessive levels of wear from constant waterfall, i.e. fountains, spraying equipment etc.  Flexiseal is available exclusively via Flexflooring and further increases the versatility of our Rubbaflex surface.

We will also be launching Flexiseal: an innovative flexible epoxy resin that can be used to seal our Rubbaflex safety surfaces to make them virtually non-porous. Flexiseal is available exclusively through Flexflooring and further increases the versatility of our Rubbaflex surface.

The original patio slabs had been in situ for a number of years and as well as looking unsightly, were dangerously uneven. In addition, the copings were also stained and unsightly. The installation of our Rubbaflex safer surface allowed the owners the opportunity to create an entirely different feel for their pool surround by introducing coloured rubber. The clients decided on a popular Flexflooring mix known as Arctic, which comprises of equal parts white, light grey and bright blue and has the overall effect of cool, calm water, tying in perfectly with the swimming pool and contrasting well with the surrounding flora and shrubbery.

In order to install Rubbaflex, the slabs were lifted and removed, allowing the area to be screeded. This provided a new stable base for Rubbaflex and increased the size of the pool surround in the process. The coping stones were also re-laid and jet washed, allowing Flexflooring to install Rubbaflex over the cantilever of the coping to the top of the liner lock. Continuing the Rubbaflex floor over the coping as well as the screeded pool surround creates a totally seamless look, which is unusual yet appealing.

Simon Hubble, Flexflooring’s Director commented, “Our Rubbaflex product, can be trowelled both horizontally and vertically making it one of the most versatile safety surfaces available on the market. In this case, it offered our client a viable alternative to installing expensive new coping stones.” On completion Flexflooring’s clients are left with a flawless surface, which looks great and is slip resistant when both wet and dry.

This Flexflooring installation also highlights the versatility of Rubbaflex, given that it was trowelled both horizontally and vertically to cover a high wall, benches and steps leading into the garden, along with the patio floor. The look is achieved by applying a special adhesive to vertical surfaces, which allows the rubber to create a strong bond.

The end result is a contemporary looking space, which ties in with the rest of the garden design and has the added bonus of ensuring the patio is non-slip too, making it an ideal area for young children to play.
